Tony came into the kitchen as she boiled the noodles and fish that the thralls had found for her at the market. The aroma made her dizzy with hunger; she’d had a piece of bread before leaving home that morning and nothing else all day. Tony didn’t seem to eat nearly as much as she did, and she’d need to find a way to work around it.

‘We’re ready to eat now,’ he said. ‘You have to go up to the room and eat there.’

‘I understand,’ she said, and poured the soup out of the wok into a bowl. She grabbed some chopsticks and a spoon as he waited impatiently, then nodded to him. ‘I’m done.’

‘Stay close,’ he said, and opened the kitchen door. It led into the passage under the stairs, and he took her carefully through a door into the entry hall so she could go up.

‘Close your eyes,’ he said, and she obliged. He took her by the upper arm and she hoped the precious food wasn’t spilling as he led her.

‘Step up,’ he said.

Someone whimpered behind her and she shivered. She carefully nudged the step with her foot and went up. The air filled with the foul smell of demon essence; the house was full of demons. She thought of his mother, powerful and cruel, and it sent a chill through her.

‘Keep going up,’ he said, nudging her. ‘Don’t look.’

‘Idiot,’ a man said with a mouth full of food behind and below her, making her jump. ‘She has to learn eventually.’

There was a loud crunching sound, like a bone being crushed, and she squeaked. The chills increased and she shivered again. She felt like an antelope with a pride of hungry lions staring hungrily at her back, and she opened her eyes to see where she was on the stairs to make a run for the top.

‘Don’t look!’ Tony said. ‘Top of the stairs here. Just walk now.’

Wet tearing echoed from below her, and more bones crunching. The prey feeling intensified, and she wanted to run more than anything. Her eyes filled with tears of terror as she shuffled forward and she heard him open the door. He led her into the room, away from the smell of demon. The air filled with the scent of her clean clothing, his sharp cruel essence, and the sexual aftermath on the bed.

‘All right,’ he said. ‘You can open your eyes now. You spilled half of that on the stairs, you’ll have to clean it up later. Now lock the door and don’t let anyone in but me. Eat something and don’t come down until I tell you.’

‘Tony…?’ she said as she placed the noodles on the dressing table. The smell didn’t make her hungry any more, instead she felt slightly sick.

‘What?’

She turned to face him. ‘Will you eat like this when we’re married? I’ve always seen you eating human food.’

He smiled. ‘I really prefer this way. Human food is interesting, but this is much more satisfying. Once I’ve destroyed the maids and moved you into my house, I plan to eat this way as often as I can.
